Acceptable Use Policy of the Pacific Biosciences Research Center

Please report violations of acceptable use policies to Brad Jones (x66982, brad@pbrc.hawaii.edu).

The network, servers and desktop computers (hereafter referred to as "computing resources") of the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC) are part of the larger University of Hawaii Network. As such, the Use and Management of Information Technology Resources Policy of the University of Hawaii is the defining statement of policy for all PBRC computer users. PBRC faculty, students and staff should familiarize themselves with the University acceptable use policies. Full compliance with these University policies is expected of all PBRC computer users.

In addition to the University policies, the Computer Network Support Facility (CNSF) of PBRC has outlined several guidelines which are listed below. Most of these guidelines are expanded from the Unversity policies. In any case of ambiguity or disagreement, the University policy supersedes the PBRC policy, just as State and Federal laws supersede the University policy.

Failure to abide by University or PBRC guidelines may result in immediate termination of a user's account and other access to computing resources. Serious infractions involving violation of University, State or Federal regulations or statutes will be reported to the appropriate authority and the CNSF will cooperate fully in any ensuing investigation.

  1. Computer and network users will respect the rights and feelings of others.

    • Information distributed to others via email, Internet newsgroups, discussion forums, listservers, web pages etc. will exhibit common decency and respect for the diverse views of others. Offensive language and intolerant ideas are considered inappropriate in all forms of electronic communication emanating from PBRC.

    • Items that may be freely or accidentally observed by any other person should reflect the highest standards of professionalism and good-taste. Such items include, but are not limited to, Web Pages, Web Browser Bookmarks and History lists, files left on a computer disk where others might find them, screensavers, screen backgrounds and jobs sent to network printers. Material stored or transmitted on PBRC computing resources must not be offensive, abusive or harassing in any way. Because sensitivities to offensive material vary greatly in different individuals, we encourage all users to err on the side of caution in this area.

    • Personal messages should be sent only to "willing" recipients. Email, especially of a personal nature, must never be sent to anyone who has specifically requested that they do not want to receive such messages.
