Research Description

Dr. Chang has previously served as the principal investigator of three independent minority student research-training grants sponsored by NIGMS and NIDDK, National Institutes of Health (NIH). Between 1991-2002, Dr. Chang, who is of Native Hawaiian and Chinese ancestry, received research funding from the Research Centers in Minority Institutions Program, NCRR, NIH, for work in building community-capacity, diabetes epidemiology and cardiovascular disease risk factors among Native Hawaiians, and support to investigate the insulin-resistance syndrome among Hawaii's Multi-Ethnic populations. Her current research involves using health information technology that includes a decision support system to improve patient-centered diabetes health care in rural Hawaii communities. As a faculty in Ecology and Health, Dr. Chang has contributed, as a Peer Reviewer on the Editorial Board of the international journal EcoHealth, was a Guest Editor of a Special Issue of EcoHealth, "Indigenous Perspectives on Ecosystem Sustainability and Health", and currently serves on the EcoHealth Advisory Council. Dr. Chang is the Recruitment Coordinator for the NSF/IGERT grant - Integrating Ecology, Conservation, and Pathogen Biology Graduate Program. As an instructor with the Interdisciplinary Seminar series on Current Topics in Global Health and Population Studies, she leads discussions on issues related to Indigenous Peoples, Health Disparities, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and Place-Based Health.
