These are Leptospira, spirochetes (cork-screw or spiral shaped bacteria) that are six to nine micrometers long. Leptospira cause leptospirosis, an infectious disease that affects the liver and kidneys in humans and some animals. It is transmitted through contact with infected urine or water, such as streams that are used by animals (like rats or goats). If you think you are near an infected area, don't drink the water or go in with an open wound!
