Everyday insects from our lives

Butterfly2
Monarch Butterfly 2

Another view of a Monarch butterfly. Butterflies have two large compound eyes. Most of them have a mouthpart called a proboscis, colored orange and rolled up in this image. The proboscis can be unrolled and is used like a drinking straw for sipping nectar.

Monarch butterflies have a poison in them from eating milkweed. It does not harm the butterfly, but if a bird tries to eat a monarch butterfly, it will throw up! Monarchs have black and orange wings, and the birds learn not to eat orange butterflies after trying the Monarch!
