What is a PSM?

A Professional Science Master’s (PSM) is a graduate degree that usually consists of two years of academic training in an interdisciplinary area of science, mathematics or technology. In addition, this degree may also have a “cross-training” or internship component to it in areas such as business, management, and communications.

How does a PSM benefit people?

Individuals who have gotten a Professional Science Master’s are trained to have a deep scientific knowledge as well skills to apply that knowledge in innovative ways. Many employers are finding their needs for both a scientific knowledge and innovative thinking overlapping and are more and more often hiring individuals who have obtained a PSM degree. As more PSM graduates are being hired, it is creating a more innovative, cross-trained, technologically prepared, and business-savvy workforce.

How do PSMs benefit the greater community?

PSMs benefit the community by supplying the labor market with highly skilled workers that are capable of working in research, development, and various areas of both science and business. Also, PSM graduates tend to stay within the area where they obtained the degree, producing a regional “brain gain”. Having a community that has multitudes of PSM graduates usually has a more effective and expansive high-end workforce.

What is the NPSMA?

National Professional Science Master’s Association (NPSMA) is a collaborative of Professional Science Master’s degree program individuals that support PSM degree initiatives. NPSMA engages business entities, as well as organizations, agencies and other associations, in the development of PSM programs, internships and job placements.

This program is completed with three semesters of graduate coursework at Sacramento State. The rest of the program consists of a six month paid internship with a disease team at the UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures. This combination of coursework and internship best prepares graduates of the program for immediate success in such positions as laboratory manager, doctoral candidate in applied biosciences, and other cure and treatment specialties.

Program: Environmental Sciences

This program consists of taking courses in multiple disciplines to have the best comprehension of both the business and scientific areas of the environmental sciences.
