The contractile vacuole (cv), an organelle used by many protists for osmoregulation of water and some ions, such as calcium, is connected to the cell surface in Tetrahymena usually by two “pores” (cv p), indentations of the plasma membrane. A spent food vacuole (fv) lies nearby. EM taken on 1/8/74 by R. Wolf with Hitachi HU11A TEM. Neg. 17,500X. Bar = 1µm.
