The AZM enters the oral cavity where it occupies the right side of
the buccal cavity (bc) while cytopharyngeal lamellae composed
of microtubules arise from the left wall of the cavity. Large vesicles
(disc) that contain lipid-like osmiophilic material line up
between the ribbons and make close contact with the single membrane of
the food vacuole-forming cytopharynx (cp). Under different
fixation conditions these vesicles are compact (arrow) and are
very electron opaque. (See paper by Klotzel, J. Cell Sci. 15:379-401,
1974). Possible early fusion sites between the discoidal vesicles and
the cytopharynx membrane are indicated by arrowheads. The elongated
narrowed tips of the cilia extend into the nascent vacuole
(nfv). Numbers indicate the same cilia as those numbered in
