Euplotes has a plasma membrane (pm) covering a very flat and electron opaque alveolar sac (al). The alveolar sac membrane (oam and iam) appears less opaque than the alveolar content. The septum (arrow) between alveoli forms a slight bulge in the cell surface. Cilia of a membranelle of the AZM have well defined doublets, singlets and dynein arms as well as spokes. m, mitochondrion; mt, microtubules. EM taken on 7/29/67 by R. Allen with Philips 200 TEM.
