Fig. 9: expanded view of buccal cavity and cytopharynx

A section serial to that of Figure 5 showing the four ciliary rows of the quadrulus next to the cytopharynx’s left lip and the eight ciliary rows of the two peniculi. A mass of endocytic vesicles and early endosomes lies internal to the membranelles. This is one of the primary sources of the carrier vesicles that bind to the microtubular ribbons of the cytopharynx. Short ribbons of microtubules extend laterally toward the plasma membrane from the dorsal row of the basal bodies of the dorsal peniculus and from the dorsal row of the quadrulus (arrows). In the peniculus these ribbons are associated with nodes of the filamentous reticulum. Microtubules (*) are also found in the space between the filamentous reticulum (fr) and the alveolus (al) at the level of the cytostomal cord (cc). It is not clear where these microtubules arise, unless they represent the distal ends of the laterally oriented ribbons which are sharply bent by the barrier imposed by the filamentous reticulum that lies next to the alveoli.
